The coffee table belonged to the artist’s mother. When she had a stroke, Jan was in her home for several months while she partially recovered. The brass vase was there, and the clock. There were glasses, and cassettes., and a book.on the knotty pine wall was an image of zephyrs. Ruled paper was scattered around, and a window with a louvre. The painting was the product of that difficult time.

The face on the vase is inspired by Paul Klee’s work.
